A product developer is responsible for new product design (NPD) - developing new products and improving existing products to meet customers’ needs more effectively. Often, they combine design, business and engineering skills to cater to product and market needs.

As a product developer, you will need to conduct product and market research, and develop proposals and prototypes. Product development roles also collaborate with marketing, technical and manufacturing specialists, and supervise the design process.

  • Product developers assess competitors’ products and designs to compare projects.
  • Working closely with sales, operations, and manufacturers to deliver quality production are essential product development skills.
  • A product developer has to review products and updates to meet company quality standards, scheduled production, and work-in-progress tracking and reports.
  • They are expected to contact proper stakeholders to share changes to project scope and timelines.
  • Coordinating with other engineers to evaluate and improve software and hardware interfaces falls within product development responsibilities. 
  • As part of their role, product developers introduce agile methodologies and development best practices to enhance product development.
  • As product developer, you will need to collaborate with the IT team and other support staff to develop new applications.
  • Product developers also gather and define customer requirements to develop clear specifications for project plans.
  • A product developer must consult with engineering team members to determine system loads and develop improvement plans.
  • The product developer must be skilled at designing, developing, and implementing software applications for websites based on analyzed requirements and understanding of industry technical standards.
  • Product developers must schedule production and work-in-progress tracking and reports.
Key Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree/Masters in engineering or industrial design.
  • Proven working experience as a product developer or in related field.
  • Be comfortable using prototyping equipment such as 3D printers and CNC machine.
  • Be comfortable using design software such as SOLIDWORKS and Autodesk.
